Make the most of a Staycation in the UK

In 2021 we’re naturally a little more cautious when it comes to making plans. But it is important for our mental well-being to keep thinking ahead about what we want to achieve and do, and to lay the groundwork to put positivity in our path. Plus, we all need a holiday more than ever!

A "staycation" is a great way to avoid the risks of border closures and quarantines, and give your plans a minimal chance of disruption. One of the silver linings of the past year (2020) has been the chance to discover more right on your doorstep, to uncover local walking trails, cycle paths, historic sites, or gems of nature that you are possibly a little irked that you didn’t take the time to explore earlier!

A beach break in the UK

If you are based in the UK, you are lucky enough to have diverse landscapes, unique local cultural quirks, and (fascinating and complex in equal measures) history to get acquainted with. You could take a UK staycation every year and make it into a completely different experience every time!

Make the most of a staycation in the UK – Stay active!

Of course it’s what we advocate, but we truly believe getting out among nature, walking or cycling, is the best way to truly understand and appreciate your surroundings.

It gives you the chance to socially distance whilst still encountering and interacting with like-minded trail-goers (Covid-responsibly please), releases feel good chemicals in your brain, and of course gives the ultimate sense of achievement when you reach your next destination under your own steam.

Cycling in the Cotswolds

Ask yourself what you’ve been drawn to do, to keep your mind and body active during the toughest lockdown times. Did you walk more? Did you take up cycling again?
What did you enjoy most? Was it wandering slowly between local towns and villages, or getting as far out into remote spaces as you could? Was it setting challenges and pushing yourself? All of this could help you pinpoint the ideal active staycation holiday.

UK Staycation Ideas

The West Highland Way is our most popular adventure (and has already sold out on select dates, so do hurry!). A world class and renowned trail, from the city of Glasgow into the wilderness of the Highlands and onward to Fort William.

Rannoch Moor West Highland Way

Scotland's most famous trail is a must-do for any adventure-seeker.

Missing the beach? Scotland has you covered again. Head to the Scottish Islands to visit beaches so beautiful, some of them have been voted most beautiful in the world! Read Brian’s photo diary for more inspiration.

Luskintyre Beach

The Isle of Harris. Can you imagine a more perfect beach?!

History buff? No problem, combine a walking or cycling adventure with Hadrian’s Wall Path, following the route of the Roman monument. Or alternatively, walk the historic Welsh border fortifications along Offa’s Dyke.

Offa's Dyke Path

Offa's Dyke Path: Castles, ruins, and ancient lore.

Need a challenge? How about walking Coast to Coast? Choose an itinerary you can achieve by putting in the training, and work towards it. Or, cycle the C2C.

Coast to Coast pebble at the beach

Tradition dictates you collect a pebble at one coast, to carry cross-country.

A touch of style? This luxury Highlands Rail & Hike adventure is the best of all worlds.

Scottish porridge and whisky

Breakfast of dreams? Make sure you enjoy the local hospitality!

A walking holiday within easy reach of London? The South Downs Way national trail is an ideal adventure for a proper escape to nature without too much travel time.
