Offa's Dyke is a long-distance walk that takes you along the border of England and Wales following the original Offa's Dyke that was built way back in the 8th Century. There are parts of the Dyke that remain today so you will get a real feel of the Historic areas that we are walking through each day.
I have compiled a list of the top things you need to know about this amazing trail.
How long is the trail?
The trail is 177 miles (285 Km) long, you will be able to make this as easy or hard as you like with our itineraries. Choosing the shortest itinerary will give you a great challenge by covering lots of distance each day. You may prefer to choose to walk at a more relaxed pace, taking the time to visit historical buildings and admire the beautiful surroundings.
How hard is the trail, do I need to be really fit?
You will be walking through an ever-changing landscape and with that you will notice that some of the steeper sections progress into more gentle ups and downs (don’t let the harder sections put you off as they don’t last forever!)
I would say that the hardest section is on the Shropshire Hills between Keighton and Brompton Crossroads, this is a hilly day and can be quite exposed at times if the weather is bad. If you have been out training for this walk you should be able to cope and if you think your legs might be a little wobbly the next day just ask our team to build in a rest day.
Where is it?
The Offa's Dyke Trail will take you on a beautiful walk crossing over the Welsh and English border, following the original Offa's Dyke for approx 80 miles of the 177 mile route. Our route starts in Prestatyn, on the shores of the Irish Sea and heads south right across country down to Chepstow. You will pass through some beautiful villages that are steeped in history, not forgetting numerous castles and forts!
Is it easy to get to?
There is an airport fairly close to the beginning and end of this walk, at the Northern end it is Liverpool Airport and at the southern end the closest airport is Cardiff.
Public transport links on this walk are good so if you are only planning on completing a smaller section, getting there should be easy.
When is the best time of year to go?
While we offer this trip over Spring/Summer/Autumn I would suggest that the best time to complete this would be May or September. Traveling in those months will mean that you avoid the crowds that can appear during school holidays and you will be able to see the beautiful wildflowers in Spring!
Will I get mobile reception?
This will largely depend on what network you are with, but you will find that throughout the walk the signal will be patchy. So, make sure that you download our app and save the walking route offline so that you know you will be able to complete the walk with no problems.
Is the trail waymarked?
Yes, you will see the little Acorn symbol that is used on all National Trails.
I hope that this has answered some of your burning questions about Offas Dyke, if you would like to know more or en quire about completing this amazing adventure please get in touch with our team and they will be delighted to help you.
