If you are walking the St Cuthbert’s Way you should consider spending an extra day (and night) on Holy Island. Not only will this atmospheric place enhance your experience, but you also get to discover what it is like when the tidal causeway shuts, and the day-trippers have left. Lindisfarne Castle

You simply cannot beat the island views from the castle, and it is more than worth the steep climb from the harbour. The castle was built in the mid-1500s to protect the North of England from the Scots. The opening times vary, depending on the tide times. St Aidan’s Winery

Fancy a free sample of Lindisfarne Mead to quench your thirst? This alcoholic beverage is locally produced on Holy Island and can be tasted in St Aidan’s Winery. As well as wine, you can also purchase whisky, mead-based jams, and biscuits. Souvenirs anyone?

The Gertrude Jekyll Garden

Garden designer, writer and artist Gertrude Jekyll created this garden in 1911. Best visited in summer, the walled garden is colourful, and its flowers give off a lingering scent. Located just north of the castle, the two are easily combined. Read more about the garden on the website of National Trust UK.

Lindisfarne Priory

This is the very place where Christianity spread from across the north of England and it was famously raided by Vikings in 793. Interestingly this is also where the ‘Lindisfarne Gospels’ were written more than 1000 years ago. Visit the site and take in the same coastal views as the monks did, hundreds of years ago!

St Cuthbert’s Island

This small tidal island is only accessible from Holy Island, at low tide. Another tidal causeway I hear you think… It is said that St Cuthbert came here for peace and quiet from the busy priory. There are great views to the mainland and if you are lucky enough you will even spot the local seals! Always check the tide times before visiting, it would not be fun to get trapped by fast-rising tides.

The Links & Holy Island Beaches

Get away from the crowds and visit the Northumbrian beaches on the northern side of the island – away from the village. “The Links” is a dune system that is part of the Lindisfarne Nature Reserve where you can spot rare animals and plants. Beyond the dunes, you will find three deserted beaches, North Shore, Coves Haven and Sandham Bay. Perfect for a picnic!
