We’ve teamed up with organizations on two of our most popular UK walking routes, The West Highland Way and the South West Coast Path.  

Recognizing the rising costs of maintaining these paths and to help ensure their future sustainability, we’re donating $5 for every customer who travels along these routes with us.

In Scotland, The West Highland Way is now established as the most popular long-distance walk and we’re the largest operator on the route, with exceptional knowledge of its paths, people and places. This donation of $5 per customer will help support and maintain its 96 miles of paths as well as the bridges, gates, signage and drainage which are regularly hampered by the famously wet, Scottish weather, and the increasing severe weather events.  

Sue Hilder, Chair of the West Highland Way Management Group said, “The West Highland Way is Scotland’s best-loved long-distance route but there are challenges in keeping such a popular route maintained, including increased costs of materials and the need for specialist labor skills.  We’re grateful for this additional support which will help ensure the route can be enjoyed by walkers for years to come.”  

The South West Coast Path is the longest of England’s National Trails. This stunning route is on every walker’s bucket list with 630 miles of coastal walking around the coastlines of Somerset, Exmoor, North and South Devon and Cornwall. We offer 18 different hassle-free itineraries with daily luggage transfers along the South West Coast Path and the $5 donation for every customer who hikes the route will help the SWPCA with their necessary maintenance work.  

So far, our donations have supported their “Step Up” challenge which involves replacing, fixing and improving some of the 30,000 steps they have on this route! The materials they use are in keeping with the local environment, such as locally sourced timber and granite.

Other maintenance and improvement work includes adding stepping slabs to areas that have eroded, building boardwalks over marshland to preserve and protect the natural ecosystems that inhabit there, and where possible, replacing steps with ramps to make sections more accessible for wheelchair users. 

Neil concludes, “While we’re continually adapting and innovating so that there’s always something new on offer for the varied needs of our customers, these classic, iconic walking routes continue to be a cherished part of our business and we want to ensure they remain that way for generations to come.”

Leave No Trace 

We’ve partnered with Leave No Trace, a US-based company, with organizations in Ireland, Japan, New Zealand and Canada. They’re a non-profit company that specializes in educating the public about the best solutions for protection of the natural world. Backed up by extensive scientific research, they’ve created The Leave No Trace 7 Principles which provides an accessible framework that the public can put into practice and apply to their adventures, or everyday life!  

One of the greatest benefits of our partnership with Leave No Trace is the extensive outdoor education that they have developed. Using knowledge from biologists, land managers, and other leaders in outdoor education, Leave No Trace has created different free educational courses for the learning and development of the everyday enjoy-er of the outdoors! Together, we’re working to ensure 70% of Macs Adventure staff complete the Leave No Trace course, as well as encouraging our travelers to take part too.
