The 5 Best Places to Walk or Hike in July

At Macs Adventure we believe in making the most of every season (and we probably claim at the start of every new season that it is our favourite one!). Each time of year offers its own particular qualities for adventure seekers, but here we focus on the best places to walk in July. This is not just a list for sunshine-seekers. We're thinking out of the box a bit here, and these walks all have their own benefits which make them perfect for July hiking.

1. July in Scotland

We'll be honest, the weather in Scotland can be a little unpredictable at any time of year! But, there's no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes. July usually offers some of the highest temperatures, without being too extreme, making Scotland an ideal destination. 662.Walkers-on-the-West-Highland-Way

The eminent West Highland Way is the most popular and best loved of Scotland's walking trails, but Scotland has plenty of other options ideal for walking in July: Walking in Orkney You will be aware no doubt that the notorious midge must be contented with as part and parcel of a Scottish Summer. Fear not; firstly they are not nearly as bad as their reputation would suggest, and secondly, there are ways to avoid them, such as heading further north to Orkney. Great wildlife spotting opportunities, long days, and island hospitality. From Stromness take a coastal walk to 5000 year old Skara Brae, or walk the Island of Westray. Walking inland, the Ring of Brodgar (the largest stone circle in Scotland) is a must see. More on Walking & Wildlife in Orkney.

2. The Alps

The Tour du Mont Blanc season kicks off in June, and by July the bigger snow fields should have cleared to make passage easier. This is a trek filled with superlatives, and a must do "tick off the list" once in a lifetime. There's no mistaking that the Tour du Mont Blanc is a challenge, but part of its beauty is that it is manageable for "non-technical" climbers (obviously with the right fitness and equipment), and you can make it a bit easier on yourself by opting for baggage transfer, or "in comfort" options with accommodation in small hotels, auberges, and refuges with private rooms. Options for walking the Tour du Mont Blanc. The Bear Trail Take it a bit easier in the Swiss Bernese Oberland. It may not be the first destination that springs to mind when you think "summer holiday", but the mountain and lake vistas are nothing short of perfect in the summer sunshine, as the flower meadows blossom. 3. Walking Holidays in Iceland

The middle of summer is a wonderful time to visit Iceland. Almost 24 hour daylight makes summer in Iceland feel energised, and frankly a bit spiritual! The volcanic lanscapes, thermally heated spas, and bubbling geothermal wonders add to that feeling. Try the Laugavegur Highland Trail for a bit of a challenge, or a scenic drive and hike for an easier option.

4. Germany's Vineyards

There's nothing more idyllic than a vineyard trail in the summer. The problem is, areas like Provence and Barolo get, well, almost unbearably hot for the hiker at times in July! Moselle in Germany is hot enough to grow grapes, but not so hot you'll fall down panting after half a mile! In actual fact, the Moselle is one of the coldest climates used for commercial wine-making. Grab a Riesling and ponder the Moselle Valley Wine Trail.

4. The Channel Islands

Enjoy a delightful mix of vibes as the British Seaside meets the Continental Coastline! Watch exotic flowers bloom and enjoy spectacular coastal cliffs and delightful beaches. The Channel Islands of Jersey and Guernsey both have great coastal paths perfect for walking as a week long break. Which to choose? Browse our Channel Island Walking Holidays.

5. The Canadian Rockies

Probably better known as a winter ski destination, watch the Banff National Park blossom and allow Lake Louise to wow you with its glory by taking a walking tour in the Canadian Rockies in July. The Best of the Canadian Rockies is our suggestion for the best way to explore this hiking mecca. There is even an area of the Banff National Park called Sunshine Meadows. Could that possibly sound any more perfect?
