Start of the West Highland Way

Start of the West Highland Way

Getting to Milngavie (pronounced mull-guy) can prove confusing to those starting the West Highland Way, not least because if you call it "miln-gavie" most Glaswegians will look at you with blank incomprehension. Here is a quick and easy guide to getting to the start of the West Highland Way in Milngavie. Location: Milngavie is located 8 miles North-West of Glasgow city centre and is an outlying suburb of Glasgow. You should aim for the Milngavie Railway Station if starting your walk immediately as this is where your baggage is dropped off. The start of the walk, on a pedestrian shopping street, is very well signposted from the railway station.

Getting to Milngavie from:

Glasgow City Centre: (15 - 40 minutes)

By Taxi: You can hail a taxi on the street, call a minicab from your hotel, or use Uber. The journey takes about 15 minutes and will cost between £12 and £25.

By Train: The best and easiest option. Trains run alternately from Glasgow Queen Street and Glasgow Central Stations (lower level) to Milngavie every 15 minutes. The journey takes about 20 minutes and costs around £3. On Sundays trains only run from Glasgow Central every 30 minutes but you can change at Partick.

By Bus: A couple of bus services run from Glasgow City Centre to Milngavie. Expect the trip to take longer, more than 40 minutes. To plan your journey visit Traveline Scotland and use the Journey Planner.

Glasgow International Airport: (20 to 80 minutes)

By Taxi: The quickest and easiest option! Take a taxi from the airport on arrival direct to Milngavie. The journey takes twenty minutes and will probably cost about £20/£25.

By Bus/Train: Take one of the frequent and efficient airport shuttle buses from the airport to Glasgow Central Station and then the train to Milngavie.

Glasgow Prestwick Airport: (45 to 120 minutes) By Taxi: This will be an expensive option. Expect to pay at least £60. Train: Trains run every 30 minutes (50 minute journey time) to Glasgow Central Station where you can change trains to Milngavie. Bus: Regular buses run from Glasgow Prestwick to Glasgow Buchanan Street Bus station where you can change for Milngavie. For more info on getting to and from Glasgow Prestwick visit their website
