Exploring the Isle of Skye

Many people have said that the Isle of Skye is one of the most beautiful destinations in the UK, having never been I wanted to go check this island out for myself and I wasn’t disappointed!

Ferry to Skye

From the minute I set off on the Calmac ferry from Mallaig to Armadale I knew this was a trip that would be one to remember. There are up to 8 services a day during the summer season with reduced crossings on Sundays. The crossing takes 30 minutes across the Sound of Sleat and is known for its wonderful views to the Small Isles, Ardnamurchan, Knoydart and Skye. The waters are full of wildlife and there are frequent sightings of whales, dolphins and porpoises.

Once arriving on Skye the instant tranquillity and peacefulness is apparent and knowing you are leaving the hustle and bustle of the city behind for a few days was welcoming. I spent 5 days exploring this island and I can honestly say that nowhere else in Scotland can you find such a rich variety of landscape, history, wildlife and culture in a single island. From the towering Cuillin Mountains to its wild coastline, its traditional farming villages to its ancient rock formations, Skye has something for everyone and is every walker’s paradise.

One of the highlights of my trip was Portree, this is a picturesque harbour town with brightly painted houses and has great views of the surrounding hills. The town is on the east side of Skye overlooking the sheltered bay and is the capital of the island. I spent the day meandering through the narrow streets full of gift shops, cafes, bars and restaurants offering some of the best seafood on the island.

What is not to love about this island - you can discover the idyllic fishing villages, enjoy breath-taking landscapes of the Old Man of Storr and take advantage of the fresh air by hiking in the mountains. You can also discover some of the finest beaches in Scotland and be amazed by the Isle of Skye’s impressive waterfalls – this is one island I will definitely be visiting again!
