Best holidays for beginner walkers

Are you keen to walk further afield and travel to new places? Do you want to get a little fitter? Would you like to see the UK’s nature at its best? If so, a walking holiday could be the perfect idea. You do not have to be a super-fit hiker or a survival expert to set off on a rewarding walking holiday. You just need to make sure you choose the right walking break to suit your experience.

The benefits of walking holidays for beginners

Walking is a great way to get fit and see the countryside from a different perspective. Travelling at walking pace and at ground level, you are far more likely to glimpse a variety of wildlife and witness the landscape as you never would if you were in a car or on a bus or train. A self-guided walking break allows you to decide on the distances you would like to walk each day – and to set your own pace. Thanks to detailed maps and guiding notes you won’t need to worry too much about navigation either. A walking holiday with Macs Adventure also includes pre-booked accommodation and luggage transfer, so all you need to do is eat a hearty breakfast, pull on your walking boots and set out for a day of rewarding walking. At the end of each day, your luggage will await you at one of our carefully chosen guest houses, B&Bs or hotels. If you would like dinner to be included we can even organise that, too. And a walking holiday will see you becoming fitter rather than fatter (like so many other styles of get-away breaks!)

The best easy walking holidays in the UK

To start with, a short walking break will be your perfect choice. This will give you the opportunity to find out if you like the pace and style of a walking holiday. In fact, the UK offers a wealth of walking holiday gems for less experienced hikers. Walking holidays for beginners should also include lots of places to stop en route and days that are not too long or strenuous. All holidays should be enjoyable and relaxing, even if you’re strolling countryside trails for much of the day. A Macs Adventure short walking break is the ideal starter walking holiday. Look for trips that are graded easy or easy to moderate and if you want to walk less on each of the days, or extend the trip by a day or two so you can take in more sights, please discuss with our friendly and knowledgeable team

Cotswold Short Break: This walking holiday is graded easy to moderate and offers 20 miles of delightful hiking over three days. If you’re new to walking holidays you’ll want lots of places to see and stop at en route.  The picturesque Cotswold villages on this walking break, as well as a host of attraction gems, such as abbeys and castles, will make the walking all the more rewarding. And at the end of each day, you’ll retire to pre-booked luxurious and welcoming accommodation. Your luggage will be there waiting for you so all you need to do is soak those tired muscles in a relaxing bath, change into your dining out clothes and feast on a non-guilty meal (you’ll need to restock all your burnt calories)! This holiday does include some steep ups and downs but these will help to get you in better shape for your next slightly more demanding walking holiday!

Hadrian’s Wall Short Break: The iconic Hadrian’s Wall has long been a draw for walkers and people new to hiking will enjoy this four-day break walking 31 miles of the waymarked route.  On Hadrian’s Wall Short Break you will discover the history and landscapes of the UNESCO World Heritage site as you walk along the best-preserved section of the wall. We highlight great pubs and wonderful tearooms along the way so you’ll find you are never far from a treat (and a chance to recharge your walking energy). At the end of each day you’re assured a warm welcome at your comfortable accommodation. Next holiday? Why not walk the entire length of the 82-mile Hadrian’s Wall?

Trossachs Trail: A short break of three to four days (or more if you want us to tailor the holiday) sees walkers hiking between 29 and 41 miles on the fabulous Trossachs Trail in Scotland. Remote-felling yet never far from civilisation, the Trossachs Trail is a great introduction to self-guided walking. This trip offers great views for not too much daily walking and the chance to explore Scotland’s great history as you stroll through “Rob Roy Country” and walk Glen Buckie and Glen Finglas, the old hunting grounds of the Stewart Kings. Hand-picked B&Bs and luggage transferred for you make this an easy walking holiday filled with lots of interest.

Fife Coastal Path Short Break: We love the east coast of Scotland and this three-day walking break offers some of the best section of the waymarked route. With 31 miles to walk, newbie hikers will find the going easy and there are plenty of distractions even if you do find your leg muscles tiring a little. Each of the small Fife fishing villages b that you come across on the walking route boast tearooms, cafes and must-see attractions.

The seascapes and the chance to spot wildlife will give you the perfect excuse to stop for a leg stretch and a wee breather whenever you fancy. Must-see highlights on the Fife Coastal Short Break include East Wemyss, where you can visit the famous pre-historic caves and Macduff Castle, and the unique Elie Chain Walk. A fish supper in the award-winning Anstruther Fish Bar is a just reward after a day of walking. West Highland Escape: Everyone has heard of the famous West Highland Way, which is Scotland’s original long-distance waymarked walking route. The entire route is some 85 miles from Milngavie, just north of Glasgow, to the Highlands town of Fort William. However, this West Highland walking break takes in just 35 miles over three days and, arguably, some of the best scenery of the entire route. The section from Bridge of Orchy to Fort William offers fabulous Scottish Highlands views and the challenge of walking the Devil’s Staircase (this is easier than it sounds and the vista from the top on a clear day is breath0-taking). You’ll also enjoy four nights of traditional Scottish hospitality and more than a few drams of whisky if you so choose.
