Itinerary
Day 1 Arrive Agua AmargaFly into Almeria Airport, which is easily reached by regular flights from the UK and Madrid. An included transfer (40min) takes you to the hotel in the laid-back little beach town of Agua Amarga.
Settle in before enjoying some drinks on the town square and sampling some freshly caught fish.
Hotel Family Amarga is a small family run hotel right by the beach. Their lovely restaurant serves a fusion of Spanish/Morocca food and the friendly owners will surely to make you feel right at home!
A gorgeous boutique hotel located right by the seafront and with a lovely outdoor pool.
Your first walk takes you through the characteristic desert-like landscapes of the Cabo de Gata Natural Park partly on a disused mining railroad and partly on “ramblas” (dried up riverbeds). At the end of the loop passing through plains and old cortijos (rural houses) take an optional walk to the 18th century Torre Vigia defence tower and 20th century lighthouse sitting on the table top plateau of Mesa Roldan. Used as a filming location for the popular Game of Thrones, the fortress has wonderful coastal panoramas and views over the Cabo de Gata.
Ascent: Up to 260m

A gorgeous boutique hotel located right by the seafront and with a lovely outdoor pool.
A clifftop path linking the seaside villages of Agua Amarga and Las Negras takes you past a succession of unspoilt beaches and quiet coves. Watch out for the plentiful seabirds who nest on the craggy cliffs and enjoy a stop at the beach of San Pedro, only accessible on foot, and home to a small, friendly hippy colony!
Explore the ruins of the 16th century Castle of San Pedro, built to defend the cove from pirates, before continuing to Las Negras.
Ascent/Descent: 479m
Just 150m from the beach at Las Negras, the Hotel Cala Chica has wonderful views, an outdoor pool and terrace on which to enjoy drinks after a day’s walking.
Located only 5 minutes from Las Negras beach, this 4-star property offers all one would expect to provide a most restful and enjoyable stay. The hotel has a pool in which to cool off and yet further delights to allow to rest and recuperate after your days walking. These include a sauna and Turkish bath, plus heated indoor pool with water jets (these additional activities may be enjoyed at a supplement paid locally).
The Bitácora is a small scale, intimate apart`hotel, situated in the heart of the Cabo de Gata nature reserve, overlooking the nearby village of Las Negras and the Mediterranean. The apart`hotel consists of 7 spacious and fully equipped apartments. All of them face seawards and offer grand views of the surrounding countryside, the village and the Mediterranean.
Today, take a short diversion inland again before heading back to the coast and then on to Rodalquilar via Playazo Beach and the Torre de las Lobos, a fantastic viewpoint with watchtower.
Arriving in the tiny inland village of Rodalquilar, you may feel like you have stepped on to the set of a spaghetti western, with its abandoned gold mines and botanical gardens home to exotic cacti.
Ascent: 458m / Descent: 403m
The Hotel Naturalezer is a 4* hotel in a tranquil setting reminiscent of an Arabian garden. Enjoy spa facilities including saunas, Turkish bath and hydromassage showers—again all lovely after a day’s walking!
The white-washed town of Rodalquilar sits in a volcanic crater at the heart of the Cabo de Gata Natural Park and is perfectly situated for a relaxing free day or to explore further. The town has a rich history to uncover, from defensive towers built to fend off pirates to ruins of the once-lucrative gold mining industry. You may wish to visit the museum of mining or the mine ruins themselves.
For a more relaxed day you could visit the stunning beach of El Playazo, or stroll around the extensive botanical gardens.
If you'd like to walk instead, the Rodalquilar Loop Walk offers a a fantastic contrast to the previous days of coastal walking, head into the dry hillsides and remote ramblas surrounding Rodalquilar. Explore the gold mines and the museum before continuing to the Cortijo del Fraile.
This isolated ruined farmhouse has been used as a set for The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. And the play ‘Blood Wedding’ by Federico Garcia Lorca was also inspired by the real life tragic events of a young couple who tried to escape from an arranged marriage here with tragic consequences.
Please note: This optional walk is longer and features more ascent/descent than the other walking days but offers a wonderful contrast and some fantastic 'spaghetti western' scenery.
Ascent/Descent: 630m

A coastal walk takes you along clifftop paths and past volcanic black sand beaches, passing the Cala de las Toros cove, fishing village of La Isleta del Moro and the18th century fort of San Felipe. As you near San Jose, pass by the imposing peak of El Fraille, the highest peak in the Cabo de Gata.
San Jose, considered the capital of the Cabo de Gata, is a bustling whitewashed village with plenty of restaurants and cafes serving delicious seafood and tapas.
Ascent: 299m / Descent: 353m

A small boutique hotel with lovely modern rooms showing great attention to detail, a beautiful roof terrace and pool in which to relax.
An easy going loop walk to some of the finest beaches in the region. Playa de Los Genoveses has over a kilometre of golden sands and in contrast to that there is the atmospheric black sandy beach of Monsul with its distinctive volcanic rocks, used as a filming location for Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

Almeria is the easiest airport to fly into, which is easily accessed by flights from across the UK and Europe. Airlines flying from the UK include low cost carriers such as Easyjet and Ryanair as well as British Airways.

On arriving in Almeria, an included transfer will pick you up and take you to your hotel in Agua Amarga (40min).
We can also arrange transfers to and from Malaga Airport (3hrs) for an additional charge. Please contact us for further details.
The closest airport is again Almeria. Several buses a day run from San Jose to Almeria (apart from a Sunday when there is only one bus) taking approx 1hr. From the bus station, take one of the regular shuttle buses between there and the airport (35min).
Private Transfers:
If you prefer we can arrange a private transfer from San Jose back to the airport for you for an additional cost.
