Regional wines of the Camino Invierno

As well as being a route filled with history and beautiful natural landscapes, another reason to walk the Camino Invierno is the fact that it passes through so many famous wine-producing regions and Destinations of Origin. Take some time to sample some of the below on your walk;

Bierzo DOA

This fertile area in the northwest of the province of Leon (where you will pass through when in Ponferrada) is home to several vineyards, the development of which are linked to the development of monasteries.

Valdeorras DOA

This region is growing a reputation as one of the best places for quality white wine in Spain. The vineyards here line the slopes along the banks of the River Sil and are well-drained, meaning they are ideal for grape production. The wine produced here is similar in character to the well known Chablis. Some vineyards also use fruit harvested later in the season that’s fermented and aged in large oak barrels.

Ribeira Sacra DOA

The Ribeira Sacra region is home to some of the finest wines in Galicia. We highly recommend adding an extra night in Monforte de Lemos if you have time as we can arrange a visit to a local wine cellar from here which will include an amazing tasting lunch! The vineyards here stand hundreds of feet up above the Sil River and they use an elevator system to get grapes to the main road.
